Spotting During Pregnancy

Spotting during pregnancy is a something one should be concerned with. If you notice that you are experiencing this issue then you should feel compelled to call your midwife or your doctor right away. This includes situations when you notice the bleeding and it eventually concludes. It may be no big deal in the long run, but there is a chance that if you delay, you may add further complications to a serious problem. Your situation will most likely be unique, and handled as such, but your practitioner will be the one who knows best.
It is important to keep in mind that spotting is different from bleeding. Just as when you start your period, it can vary in color, ranging from pink to red, usually resembling dried or non-oxygenated blood.
Spotting or bleeding can be cause by various things, your doctor is likely to ask you about your recent activities, so it is important to be completely honest so that he/she can make the most accurate assessment possible. Some of the causes include: sex, an internal examination, a Pap smear, implantation bleeding, ectopic pregnancy, or a miscarriage.
In the case of sex being the cause, it is important to note that more blood flows to your cervix during pregnancy. When you consider this, it is not at all uncommon to notice some bleeding right after sexual intercourse. There is also the possibility that a benign growth found on the cervix is the direct cause of the bleeding.
If you have recently gone to the doctor and had to undergo a Pap smear or an external exam, then you may see the same results for similar reasons, greater blood-flow is being moved by your body to your cervix or your cervical polyp. If you believe this to be the case, keep in mind, it is still important to contact a health care professional.
Implantation bleeding is something that may occur in the earliest stages of pregnancy, sometimes you will not even be aware that you are pregnant when this occurs. Usually if this is the case, you will only have spotting for a day or two, at most a week, otherwise your bleeding is likely derived from another cause. This variety of bleeding happens when your fertilized egg starts to embed itself in you uterus wall.
If your spotting or bleeding also includes cramping or stomach pain’s, then you may be experiencing a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, which is when the embryo implants itself outside of the uterus, often times in a fallopian tube. It is dire to note that a ectopic pregnancy can be life threatening. This is the very reason that you should not delay or assume that you know the exact cause of your spotting without notifying a knowledgeable heath care professional.
It should be noted that you can’t get your menstrual period during a pregnancy, but some women have reported vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. Some women will also experience intermittent bleeding that may seem to them as thought they were having a period, but menstruation is not identical to vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. Women should keep in mind that if they experience what they would believe to be their period during the course of their pregnancy, the bleeding will usually only last a couple of days, and the coloring is far lighter than it would typically be if they were truly having a menstrual period.
Spotting during a pregnancy can be a confusing thing to diagnose. There are various possibilities, and there are different symptoms, indications, and in some circumstances, necessary testing involved. The important thing to remember is that you need to call your doctor, or contact a medical professional as soon as you notice the spotting. Do not assume you a getting your period, even if the spotting occurs around the time you would normally expect to see bleeding. Only a doctor or a licensed practitioner is qualified and knowledgeable enough to diagnose what is truly taking place. The causes can range from simple, non-detrimental causes, to very sever indications of problems that need immediate attention. [...]
